There are two prominent features in my mind at Caesarea Philippi. The headwaters of the Jordan are tranquil and clear here. The rocky escarpment and cave dominate the area and tower over the stream. Christ chose to use the rock and the cave in His illustration in Matthew 16:18. So to I have included references to the Lord as the rock of the Christian.
II Samuel 22:1-4, 47
1: And David spake unto the LORD the words of this song in the day that the LORD had delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul: 2: And he said, The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; 3: The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence. 4: I will call on the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies. 47: The LORD liveth; and blessed be my rock; and exalted be the God of the rock of my salvation.
Psalm 62:1-8
1: Truly my soul waiteth upon God: from him cometh my salvation. 2: He only is my rock and my salvation; he is my defence; I shall not be greatly moved. 3: How long will ye imagine mischief against a man? ye shall be slain all of you: as a bowing wall shall ye be, and as a tottering fence. 4: They only consult to cast him down from his excellency: they delight in lies: they bless with their mouth, but they curse inwardly. Selah. 5: My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him. 6: He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defence; I shall not be moved. 7: In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God. 8: Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.
