Pisa

Today, Pisa is a quiet university town. Pisa is noted for its leaning tower (Campanile), a bell tower that is often considered one of the seven wonders of the modern world. The ground beneath the tower started to sink after the first three stories were built. In 1928 the government reinforced it to prevent further leaning. The tower was built entirely of marble and is a fine example of Romanesque architecture. It is 179 feet tall and the inner staircase is composed of 300 steps. Pisa also has a cathedral with beautiful antique columns, a baptistery with interesting echo effects, and the Campo Santo (cemetery) with superb galleries.
