Troy

One of the best-known stories from antiquity is that of the Trojan horse, which takes place in the city of Troy. Troy is not located in Greece as many people think; it is near the Aegean Sea in modern Turkey. According to the story, Paris of Troy abducted Helen, the wife of Menelaus of Sparta. Agamemnon, the brother of Menelaus, led an army of Greeksto Troy to get Helen back but was initially unsuccessful. Finally, some of the Greeks his inside a large wooden horse they has built and left outside the gates of Troy, while the rest of the Greek expedition pretended to sail away out of defeat. The Trojans brought the horse inside the city walls and during the night the soldiers climbed out of the horse and opened the gates for the rest of the Greek soldiers. The story is not likely to be historically accurate, but perhaps is based on an actual conquest of Troy by the Greeks.

Today, remains of the ancient city can be visited, and there is a large wooden horse at the entrance to serve as a reminder of the legend of the ancient city.
