Lucerne

Lucerne is a city in Switzerland. It is the most populous city in Central Switzerland and a focal point of the region. Because of its location on the shore of Lake Lucerne, within sight of Mount Pilatus and Rigi in the Swiss Alps, Lucerne is traditionally considered first and foremost as a tourist destination.

The most famous site in Lucerne is the Chapel Bridge (Kappellbrucke). It is a 204-meter long wooden bridge originally built in 1333, although largely replaced in 1993 due to a fire. Inside the bridge there are a series of paintings from the 17th century depicting events from Lucerne’s history. The bridge runs by an octagonal Water Tower (Wasserturm).

The Spreuerbrucke is another bridge in Lucerne. It is the oldest covered bridge in Europe and features a series of medieval-style 17th century paintings. It has a small chapel in the middle that was added in 1568.

The Church of St. Leodegar, popularly known as the Hofkirche, is located on a small hill just above the lakefront in Lucerne. The present structure was erected in 1633 in the late Renaissance style; however, its twin needle towers are remnants of an earlier structure.
