CHURCH of the HOLY SEPULCHRE

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre was built over the traditional sites of both the crucifixion and the burial of Jesus. It has a long and complex history leading back to a Temple of Venus which is said to have been built over the land venerated by the early Christian community of Jerusalem. This land had been covered with earth and built upon by Hadrian during the reconstruction of Jerusalem after the Jewish revolt of 70 A.D. Yet over 250 years later, the Christian community of Jerusalem still remembered this site as the place where Jesus was crucified; when in 325, Constintine's mother came looking for sites related to the life and death of Jesus, the Christian community was able to direct her to the land under the Temple of Venus.
