You will attend the Full Passion Play. In 1980, 1984, 1990 and again in 2000, ETS was the largest
distributor of Passion Play tickets. All our passengers were able to attend the full Play. Other companies
promised tickets but were unable to secure enough. Some clients attended only half the play
because they had to share tickets.

Oberammergau Passion Play
Once each decade the spotlight shines on the tiny Bavarian hamlet of Oberammergau,
illuminating its devotion to a centuries-old tradition. By the summer of 1633, nearly 100
people in the small village had died as the Black Plague continued its ravaging sweep through Europe.
In a desperate attempt to isolate themselves, the people of Oberammergau blocked the entrances of their town.
But a homesick villager slipped past the “guards” to rejoin his family. Unfortunately, he brought the
dreaded infection with him. Within three days he was dead and Oberammergau was no longer free of the plague.
The villagers pleaded with God, pledging to perform a re-enactment of the passion of Jesus if God would save
the town. The deaths stopped and, since that day, the villagers have stepped on stage once every ten years.

Today, the play is presented with the same love, reverence and devotion in which the vow was made.
The town’s people produce and star in a theatrical production of the passion of Christ. The performance reflects
centuries-old traditions in costumes, casting and staging. Only natives or those who have lived in the town for
20 years are eligible for audition. To add to the play’s authenticity, no wigs or make-up are allowed. Cast members grow
their hair and beards to match their Biblical roles. The first play was performed in 1634 in the choir loft of the
church. Due to its popularity, the play was moved to the church yard and then to a nearby field where,
in 1930, the modern theatre was built. Seating 5000, the theatre has an open stage and natural backdrop of blue
sky and mountains. The all-day play is performed in German. The music and costumes are magnificent. The Oberammergau
Passion Play is an unforgettable experience and draws visitors from around the globe.

The Oberammergau Passion Play is a 6-hour musical and dramatic performance that every Christian should see. Passion
